About Hannah Callowhill Penn
Hannah Callowhill Penn (1671-02-11) was an English woman known for her marriage to the prominent Quaker, entrepreneur, and founder of the Province of Pennsylvania, William Penn. Following her husband’s six-year illness and his subsequent death, she successfully governed Pennsylvania for an additional eight years.
Before fame, she grew up in Bristol, England as the child of a merchant named Thomas Callowhill and later set sail for the New World at the age of twenty-eight.
Trivia: It is noted that when William Penn was planning the development of Philadelphia, he included a Callowhill Street on the city map in honor of Hannah Callowhill Penn and her extended family.
Focusing on family life, her marriage to William Penn resulted in nine children. However, only John, Thomas, Margaret, Richard Dennis and Louis survived into adulthood.
