About Gwendolyn B. Bennett

Gwendolyn B. Bennett was an influential African-American author and poet associated with the Harlem Renaissance. She was born on July 8, 1902 in Texas and spent some of her early years living on the Paiute Reservation in Nevada, where her parents worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Bennett is best known for her classic short story, “Wedding Day,” which she published in 1926. Her poetry, such as “Street Lamps in Early Spring” and “Moon Tonight,” also received acclaim during this period.

In addition to her writing, Bennett served as an editor and columnist for Opportunity, a prominent publication based in New York City.

She married Albert Jackson in 1927 and later wed Richard Crosscup despite societal resistance to their interracial union.
