Gwen Guthrie (July 9, 1950 – February 3, 1999) was an American R&B singer best known for her hit single “Ain’t Nothin’ Goin’ On But the Rent,” which topped the Billboard R&B chart. Born in Oklahoma, Guthrie began learning piano from her father at a young age and went on to become a backing vocalist for Aretha Franklin.
Aside from her own successful music career, Guthrie also wrote hit singles for artists like Ben E. King and Roberta Flack. She was married to Sam Guthrie until her passing in 1999.
