About Grete Waitz
Grete Waitz (born October 1, 1953) was a legendary Norwegian marathon runner. In 1979, she made history by becoming the first woman to complete a marathon in less than two and a half hours. She achieved numerous accolades throughout her career, including winning a gold medal at the 1983 IAAF World Championships in Athletics and clinching victory in 9 New York City Marathons, which remains unmatched by any other runner.
Prior to her fame, Waitz demonstrated her athletic prowess by securing national titles in the 400 and 800 meters as a teenager. At just age 17, she set the European junior record in the 1,500 meters.
Waitz’s profound impact on running was further honored with stamps bearing her likeness in Norway. Additionally, statues of her can be found at both the Norway pavilion in EPCOT within Walt Disney World Resort and Bislett Stadium in Oslo.
She is survived by her husband Jack, along with brothers named Jan and Arild.
