About Gregoria de Jesus
Gregoria de Jesus, born on May 9, 1875 in Caloocan, Philippines, was an activist who was also known by her nickname Oriang. She founded and served as vice president of the women’s chapter of the Filipino anti-Spanish colonialism revolutionary society Katipunan during the Philippine Revolution of the 1890s.
Prior to her activism, Gregoria was a high-performing student as a young girl. She met her first husband and fellow Filipino revolutionary Andres Bonifacio y Decastro at age 18.
Gregoria is recognized for intercepting intelligence from the Spanish colonialists on behalf of the Philippines’ revolutionaries, often holding secret meetings under the pretense of hosting lavish parties.
Following her husband Andres’ execution she married Julio Nakpil and had five children with him, in addition to one child with Andres Bonifacio.
