About Grace Lumpkin

Grace Lumpkin was an American novelist known for her work in the Great Depression-era, proletarian literature. She was born on March 3, 1891, in Milledgeville, Georgia. Her notable works include “To Make My Bread” (1932) and “A Sign for Cain” (1935), with the former receiving the Gorky Prize in 1933.

Prior to her writing career, Lumpkin worked for the YMCA and organized a night school for farmers and their wives. She later moved to New York at the age of twenty-five and became involved in communist politics.

Lumpkin married Michael Intrator in 1931 and came from a large family with ten siblings, all born in Milledgeville, Georgia.
