About Grace Bumbry
Grace Bumbry, born on January 4, 1937, in St. Louis, Missouri, is an acclaimed mezzo-soprano opera singer whose career spanned fifty years. She is best known for her performances in operas such as Don Carlo and Ernani. In 2009, she was honored with a Kennedy Center Honor for her contribution to the arts.
Bumbry achieved significant success as one of the few singers to transition from mezzo-soprano singing to soprano. Prior to her fame, she earned a scholarship to Boston University after winning a contest and was cast as Venus at Bayreuth by Wieland Wagner.
Throughout her career, Grace Bumbry helped pave the Way for African-American opera singers and was recognized with an induction into the St. Louis Walk of Fame.
Born into modest circumstances in St. Louis, Bumbry’s father worked as a railroad porter while her mother was a housewife.
