Grace Abbott was an American activist born in Nebraska on November 17, 1878. She is remembered for her dedicated work advocating for immigrants and children during the early 20th century.
Abbott served as the Director of the U.S. Children’s Bureau’s Labour Division, where she oversaw the implementation of the Keating-Owen Act of 1916. Before stepping into this role, she earned a graduate degree in social work from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and later advanced degrees in political science from the University of Chicago.
Throughout her career, Abbott authored notable publications such as The Child and the State (1938) and The Immigrant and the Community (1917). Later in life, she contributed to formulating the Social Security Act while working at t!he Social Security Administration.
