Gloria Naylor (January 25, 1950) is an American novelist best known for her novel The Women of Brewster Place (1982). Born in New York, she studied English at Brooklyn College before establishing herself as a prominent fiction writer and teacher. Naylor’s other notable works include Mama Day (1988) and Bailey’s Cafe (1992). She received widespread acclaim when The Women of Brewster Place won the National Book Award. Naylor was the daughter of Roosevelt McCain and Alberta McAlpin.
