Gladys Knight, born on May 28, 1944 in Oglethorpe, Georgia, is a renowned soul singer known as the Empress of Soul. She gained fame as part of the group Gladys Knight & the Pips and released hits like “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” and “Midnight Train to Georgia.”
Before her rise to stardom, Knight won a small-time TV contest at the age of seven, which gave her family confidence to start up The Pips.
In 1986, she won a Grammy for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal for “That’s What Friends Are For,” which she sang with Elton John and Stevie Wonder.
Throughout her personal life, Knight has been married several times – first to James Newman in 1960, then to Barry Hankerson in 1974. Later she married Les Brown in 1995 and William McDowell in 2001.
