Gladys Horton (born May 30, 1945) is an American R&B singer known for co-founding the all-female group The Marvelettes. Born in Florida, she began singing at a young age and formed a group called The Casinyets when she was fifteen, later changing their name to The Marvelettes.
Horton sang lead vocals on many of the Marvelettes’ hits, including “Playboy”, “Beechwood 4-5789” and “Too Many Fish in the Sea.” The group’s song “Please Mr. Postman” peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, catapulting them to instant Motown stardom.
She grew up in the Inkster suburb of Detroit and was raised by foster parents.
