Gladys Aylward was an English missionary born on February 24, 1902. She is best known for her work in China during the 1930s and 1940s, as depicted in the book “The Small Woman” and the movie “The Inn of the Sixth Happiness.”
Before embarking on her missionary work, Aylward worked as a maid in England before traveling to Yangcheng, China. There, she initially worked for the government enforcing a newly-passed law banning foot-binding practices.
