Gertrude Chandler Warner was a children’s author born on April 16, 1890, in Putnam, Connecticut. She is best known as the creator of the popular series The Boxcar Children, initially published in 1924 and continued by other authors into the 21st century. Prior to her literary career, Warner started teaching first grade in 1918 due to the shortage of male teachers during World War I.
Warner came from a musical family and learned to play the cello at a young age. Her books gained immense popularity among children; however, some critics expressed concerns that the lack of parental supervision depicted in them might encourage childhood rebellion.
