About Gertrude Berg
Gertrude Berg was an American actress and screenwriter who was born on October 3, 1899 in New York City, New York. She is best known for winning the Tony Award for Best Actress for her role in the 1959 production of A Majority of One.
Prior to her acting career, Berg developed a skit into a radio show to support her family after the factory where her husband worked burned down. It was during this time that she was cast as the lead actress of her own radio show, when an executive had difficulty reading her writing and asked her to perform it aloud.
Berg had two children with her husband, Lewis Berg.
