About Georgia Douglas Johnson
Georgia Douglas Johnson (1880-09-10) was an American poet born in Georgia. A prominent figure of the Harlem Renaissance, she published four collections of poetry and over two dozen plays between 1916 and 1962. Some of her best known works include “Calling Dreams,” “To Your Eyes,” and Plumes.
Prior to gaining literary fame, Johnson graduated from the Normal School at Atlanta University and studied music at Ohio’s Oberlin Conservatory. Her first poetry collection, The Heart of a Woman, was published in 1916.
Notably, many of her poems were featured in W.E. DuBois’ journal The Crisis. Additionally, Johnson was raised in Georgia as part of a family with African American and Native American heritage. She married attorney Henry Lincoln Johnson with whom she had two sons named Peter and Henry.
