About Gene Stratton-Porter
Gene Stratton-Porter was a novelist, naturalist, photographer, and author born on August 17, 1863 in Largo, Indiana. She is best known for her popular novel A Girl of the Limberlost which was adapted into several films. Additionally, she wrote other novels such as The Harvester (1911), Michael O’Halloran (1915), and The Keeper of the Bees (1925).
Growing up in Wabash County, Indiana as the youngest of twelve children, Gene published her first novel, The Song of the Cardinal, in 1903. Throughout her career as an author and naturalist, she found inspiration from her adulthood home in Indiana’s swamplands.
Gene had one daughter with her husband Charles D. Porter who was a doctor and pharmacy owner in Geneva, Indiana.
A Girl of the Limberlost became a best-seller and was adapted for both silent film and talkie versions multiple times between 1924 to 1945. In addition to these adaptations there was also a television movie made in 1990 based on this work.
