About Gabrielle-Suzanne de Villeneuve
Gabrielle-Suzanne de Villeneuve was a French novelist, born on November 28, 1685 in Paris, France. She is best known for writing the original version of the fairy tale Beauty and the Beast, which was published in 1740.
Before gaining fame as a novelist, Villeneuve was influenced by Madame d’Aulnoy and Charles Perrault. After becoming widowed and losing her fortune, she sought employment to support herself.
In addition to Beauty and the Beast, her other publications include a novella called Le Phenix Conjugal; two collections of fairy tales called La Jeune Americaine ou les Contes marins and Les Belles Solitaires; and four novels called Le Beau-frere suppose, La Jardiniere de Vincennes,Le juge prevenu, and Memoires de Mesdemoiselles de Marsange.
Villeneuve is the daughter of Jean Barbot and Dame Suzanne Allaire. In 1706,she married Jean-Baptiste Gaalon de Barzay lord of Villeneuve They had one daughter together before she became a widow at age 26
