About Frances Browne

Frances Browne was a 19th-century Irish author and poet, best known for her children’s story collection, Granny’s Wonderful Chair, published in 1856. Born on January 16th, 1816 in Ireland, Browne overcame the challenges of being blind from an early age due to smallpox. Despite her disability, she went on to become a prolific writer with works such as My Share of the World, a novel and Pictures and Songs of Home, a poetry collection.

Browne spent much of her adult life in Edinburgh and London. She came from a large family consisting of twelve siblings and passed away at the age of sixty-three without having married.
