About Flossie Wong-Staal
Flossie Wong-Staal was a renowned molecular biologist, born on August 27, 1947, in China. She is best known for being the first scientist to clone HIV and determine the gene’s functions.
Prior to her groundbreaking work with HIV, Wong-Staal worked at the National Cancer Institute alongside Robert Gallo. Additionally, she co-founded iTherX Pharmaceuticals, a company focused on developing treatment for hepatitis C.
Wong-Staal also held the position of chairman at UCSD’s Center for AIDS Research and conducted her research in Los Angeles. Her contributions to molecular biology have had a lasting impact on scientific understanding and medical treatments related to HIV and hepatitis C.
