About Florence Sabin

Florence Sabin was an American anatomist born on November 9, 1871, in Colorado. She was the first woman to head the American Association of Anatomists and a permanent member of the National Academy of Sciences. Additionally, she held the distinction of being the first female professor at Johns Hopkins University’s medical school.

After graduating from Smith College in the late 1800s, Sabin taught high school math and college zoology before pursuing further studies at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Medicine.

Sabin conducted groundbreaking research on tuberculosis and the circulatory and lymphatic systems, leading to her appointment as director at Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research’s Department of Cellular Studies. Following her retirement from teaching and research, she became a public health advocate in Colorado and received a Lasker Award in 1951 for her medical activism.

Born in Central City, Colorado to Serena Miner and George Sabin, Florence was raised by their paternal uncle and grandparents after her mother’s death. She also had an older sister named Mary.
