About Florence Kelley
Florence Kelley (September 12, 1859 – February 17, 1932) was a prominent civil rights leader known for her advocacy work in the United States. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she co-founded the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and was dedicated to promoting suffrage and civil rights.
Prior to her activism, Kelley attended Cornell University and developed an interest in socialism through her study of Karl Marx’s teachings. She also formed a close friendship with author W.E.B Dubois while working together to establish the NAACP.
In addition to her public contributions, Florence had a family life with Lazare Wischnewetzky, whom she married in 1884. Together they raised three children.
Kelley’s legacy is marked by her efforts towards securing fair labor practices such as instituting minimum wage laws and advocating for eight-hour workdays.
