Before gaining fame, Spain began her acting career in New York, performing in small theater productions. Her big break came when she appeared on Groucho Marx’s game show You Bet Your Life.
Throughout her career, she starred in popular films such as Dragstrip Girl and The Crooked Circle. Despite mostly appearing in B-movies, she took on a serious role as the moll in the critically acclaimed 1959 film Al Capone.
