About Fatima Meer
Fatima Meer (born 12th August 1928) was a prominent civil rights leader in South Africa during the 1950s, ’60s, and ’70s. She was known for her outspoken opposition to the apartheid regime. In addition to her activism, she had a successful career as a scholar and writer.
Meer graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand before earning a graduate degree in sociology from the University of Natal. Her publications include Race and Suicide in South Africa, Passive Resistance, and a biography on Nelson Mandela titled Higher than Hope.
Her work was recognized with numerous honors including the 1994 Vishwa Gurjari Human Rights Award and the 1975 Union of South African Journalists Award. Fatima Meer grew up in Durban, South Africa, within a family of Indian descent. Later in life, she became mother to her son Rashid.
