About Fanny Howe
Fanny Howe, born on October 15, 1940 in New York, is an experimental poet and author known for works such as On the Ground and The Lives of a Spirit. In 2005, she was awarded the Griffin Poetry Prize and in 2009, she received the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize.
Howe was born in Buffalo, New York to an attorney father and an Irish stage actress mother. Her debut work, Eggs: poems, was published in 1970. She has taught at various universities including Yale and Columbia.
She was briefly married to Frederick Delafield before marrying Civil Rights activist Carl Senna with whom she had three children. Her daughter Danzy Senna became a novelist.
