About Fanny Crosby
Fanny Crosby, born on March 24, 1820 in New York, was an American poet and composer known for writing over 8,000 hymns and gospel songs. Her works have had over 100 million copies printed, establishing her as one of the most prolific hymnists in history.
Crosby’s life began with adversity as she was blinded as a baby due to damage to her optic nerves. Despite this obstacle, she went on to write her first poem at age eight about her condition.
In addition to her literary contributions, Crosby was involved in missionary work and speaking engagements from 1900 until 1915. She married blind teacher Alexander Van Alstyne, Jr. in 1858 and they had a daughter who tragically died shortly after birth before separating in 1880.
