About Faith Ringgold
Faith Ringgold, born on October 8, 1930 in New York City, New York, is an African-American artist and art professor known for her painted story quilts. Raised in Harlem, she studied at the City College of New York before teaching in the art department at the University of California, San Diego.
Ringgold wrote and illustrated seventeen books for children, including the Coretta Scott King Award-winning work ‘Tar Beach’ from 1991. She was married to Burdette Ringgold and co-founded Women Students and Artists for Black Art Liberation with her daughter Michele Wallace; she also has a daughter named Barbara.
