About Evelyn Lau
Evelyn Lau is a Chinese-Canadian poet and author, known for her award-winning poetry collections including You are Not Who You Claim, Oedipal Dreams, and Living Under Plastic. Born on July 2, 1971 in Canada, she also served as the Poet Laureate of Vancouver in 2011.
Before gaining recognition for her literary work, Lau experienced a tumultuous early life. At the age of fourteen, she ran away from home and endured periods of homelessness, drug addiction, and prostitution. Her strained relationship with her parents was exacerbated by their insistence that she pursue a career in medicine instead of literature.
Lau’s personal life was marked by controversy when she became involved with W.P. Kinsella, a writing professor. This affair led to legal trouble when Lau published an essay detailing their relationship and was subsequently charged with libel.
