About Eva Jessye

Eva Jessye was an American composer, renowned for her music direction in the original productions of George Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess” (1935) and Virgil Thomson’s “Four Saints in Three Acts” (1933). She made history as the first internationally acclaimed female choir conductor of African descent.

Before gaining fame, she attended Western University in Kansas and Langston University in Oklahoma before becoming choral director at Maryland’s Morgan State College.

In addition to conducting, Jessye also composed music such as “The Life of Christ in Negro Spirituals” (1931) and a collection of her choral arrangements of traditional spirituals from 1927. In New York, she performed under the baton of Eugene Ormandy at Capitol Theatre.

Born on January 20, 1895, in Lawrence, Kansas, Jessye later resided and worked in New York City and Ann Arbor, Michigan.
