About Eva Hesse

Eva Hesse was a minimalist artist known for her innovative use of fiberglass, latex, and plastics in her sculptures. Born on January 11, 1936 in Hamburg, Germany, she attended the School of Industrial Art and Pratt Institute in New York before studying at the prestigious Yale School of Art and Architecture under Josef Albers.

Hesse’s notable works include “Repetition Nineteen III,” “Eighter from Decatur,” and “Oomamaboomba.” She was also an influential figure in the Happening movement during the 1960s.

Having been raised by observant Jews who fled the Nazi regime in 1938, Eva Hesse married sculptor Tom Doyle in 1961.
