About Ethel Waters
Ethel Waters was a prominent jazz and blues singer, as well as a stage and screen actress who gained fame for her renditions of popular songs such as “Stormy Weather” and “Am I Blue?”. She was born on October 31, 1896 in Chester, Pennsylvania.
Before gaining fame, Waters attended a costume party at a nightclub where she was persuaded to sing by some guests. This opportunity led her to land her first gig as a performer.
Notably, she became the second African American person to be nominated for an Academy Award.
Throughout her life, Waters married three times – first to Merritt Purnsley in 1910, then Clyde Edward Matthews in 1929, and finally Ed Mallory in 1938.
