About Essie Mae Washington-Williams
Essie Mae Washington-Williams was born on October 12, 1925, in Edgefield, South Carolina. She is best known as the illegitimate African-American child of segregationist senator Strom Thurmond and gained recognition as a memoirist for her Pulitzer-nominated work titled “Dear Senator,” published in 2005.
Prior to her fame as an author, Washington-Williams pursued a nursing career in New York City’s Harlem neighborhood after graduating from high school. Later on, she studied education at the University of Southern California and went on to have a thirty-year career as a schoolteacher in Los Angeles.
Active during the civil rights movement of the 1960s, Washington-Williams had a significant impact. She was born to the Thurmond family’s sixteen-year-old servant when her biological father was twenty-two years old and spent much of her childhood unaware of his identity. Raised by her mother, Carrie Butler, Essie Mae Washington-Williams made lasting contributions through both her personal story and activism.
