Erica Malunguinho, born on November 20, 1981 in Recife, Brazil, is a Brazilian politician affiliated with Partido Socialismo y Libertad (PSOL). She made history as the first transgender person to be elected to state congress with her victory in Sao Paulo in October 2018. Malunguinho gained acclaim for founding the black culture-preserving space Aparelha Luzia in 2016.
Prior to her political career, she graduated from the University of Sao Paulo and embraced her transgender identity during her university years. She also holds a master’s degree in art history and aesthetics.
