About Emily Pauline Johnson

Emily Pauline Johnson was a Canadian poet, author, and performer known for her popular poem “The Song My Paddle Sings.” She was born on March 10, 1861 in Canada. Johnson’s noteworthy poetry collections include The White Wampum, Flint and Feather, and Canadian Born.

She received most of her education at home but also studied for a time at Brantford Central Collegiate. Her stage career began during the 1880s. Johnson died of breast cancer, and her memorial service was held in Vancouver on her fifty-second birthday.

Johnson’s heritage greatly influenced her work; she was the daughter of a Mohawk chief and an English immigrant mother.
