About Emily Hobhouse
Emily Hobhouse was a British civil rights leader, born on April 9, 1860, in England. She is best known for her advocacy for the incarcerated Boer women and children during the Second Boer War from 1899 to 1902.
Prior to gaining recognition as a prominent campaigner, Emily spent fourteen years caring for her father after her mother passed away when she was twenty years old.
She earned honorary citizenship in South Africa due to her humanitarian efforts helping the victims of the war who were held in deplorable conditions within South African camps. Despite being engaged once, Emily never married, and the unworn wedding veil serves as a symbol of her dedication to uplifting women and remains displayed in the head office of the first women’s welfare organization in Orange Free State.
