Elsa Schiaparelli, born on September 10, 1890 in Italy, was a prominent fashion designer known for her collaborations with surrealist artists such as Alberto Giacometti and Salvador Dali. She is remembered for creating iconic pieces like the ‘lobster dress’ and the ‘tears dress’. Early in her career, she co-designed an embroidered evening jacket with novelist and filmmaker Jean Cocteau. Schiaparelli’s marriage to French-Swiss Count and philosopher William de Wendt de Kerlor resulted in a daughter named Maria Luisa Yvonne Radha de Wendt de Kerlor (also known as Gogo Schiaparelli). She was also a major rival of fellow fashion designer Coco Chanel.
