Ellen Arthur, born on August 30, 1837 in Culpeper, Virginia, was the wife of Chester A. Arthur, who served as the twenty-first President of the United States from 1881 to 1885. Unfortunately, she died of pneumonia before he took office.

Prior to fame, Ellen met Chester A. Arthur through her cousin who was a friend of Arthur’s.

An interesting fact about Ellen is that she was a talented soprano and sang with the Mendelssohn Glee Club and performed at benefits around New York.

In terms of family life, Ellen had two surviving children from her marriage to Chester.
