About Elizabeth Kenny
Elizabeth Kenny, born on September 20th, 1886 in Warialda, Australia, was a psychologist and the creator of the science of physical therapy. She was one of the first to propose, contrary to conventional wisdom, exercising as a Way to counter the effects of polio. The Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute in Minneapolis is named in her honor.
Prior to gaining fame for her groundbreaking work in physical therapy, Elizabeth served as a nurse in the Australian outback and later during World War I. After an epidemic of polio hit Queensland, she shifted her focus to researching this condition.
A noteworthy aspect of Elizabeth’s career is that while her suggestion that the poliovirus affected muscles rather than nerves was initially met with skepticism in Britain, it gained significant support in the US due to experiments supporting her theory.
She was born into a family from Warialda- Michael Kenny being an Irish farmer by profession.
