About Elizabeth Hawes
Elizabeth Hawes was an American fashion designer and political activist who was known for designing clothing with the consumer in mind, rather than catering to editors. Born on December 16, 1903 in Ridgewood, New Jersey, she attended Vassar College in New York, following in the footsteps of her mother and sister Charlotte. At just 12 years old, she began designing accessories for her mother’s friends.
Hawes married Ralph Jester in 1930 but they divorced in 1934. She later married Joseph Losey in 1937 before divorcing him in 1944.
