About Elizabeth Harrison
Elizabeth Harrison, born on September 1, 1849 in Kentucky, was a prominent figure in the field of early childhood education. She is best known for founding the Chicago Kindergarten Training School, now National Louis University.
Harrison was a dedicated teacher and author who wrote several influential books including Some Silent Teachers, Montessori and the Kindergarten, and A Study of Child Nature. Before making her mark in education, she drew inspiration from the kindergarten movement in late Nineteenth Century Chicago and pursued education classes in New York and St. Louis.
She also organized an educational conference series that would eventually evolve into the National Parent Teachers Association. Her memoir, Sketches Along Life’s Road, was published three years after her passing.
Born in Athens, Kentucky and later residing in Chicago, Illinois before eventually passing away at seventy-eight years old in San Antonio Texas.
