About Elizabeth Fry
Elizabeth Fry was born on May 21, 1780, in England. She was a philanthropist and activist best known for her advocacy of merciful treatment of prisoners. Her commitment to this cause began after witnessing the unjust treatment of prisoners at Newgate Prison in London.
Prior to gaining recognition for her activism, Fry started her community work by donating old clothes to the poor. In 2001, she became the first woman depicted on the Bank of England £5 note as a tribute to her contributions.
At the age of 20, Fry married Joseph Fry, a banker.
