Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-03-06) was an English poet, known for her famous love poems dedicated to her husband, Robert Browning. She was a prominent figure in the Victorian era and is celebrated for her contributions to romantic poetry.
Browining’s interest in Greek and Roman mythology and history developed at an early age when she read Alexander Pope’s translation of Homer at eight years old. By the time she was ten, she had already written her own Homeric-style epic poem titled The Battle of Marathon: A Poem.
Her work “How Do I Love Thee” is regarded as a masterpiece of romantic poetry. Born into the wealthy Barrett family, Elizabeth was the oldest of twelve children. In 1845, after an extended correspondence by mail, she met Robert Browning and eventually gave birth to their son Pen Browning at forty-three years old.
