Elizabeth Arden, born on December 31, 1878, in Woodbridge, Canada, was an influential entrepreneur and one of the wealthiest women of her time. She is best known for building a billion-dollar cosmetics empire.
Prior to her fame, Arden lived with her brother in New York City and worked as a bookkeeper for the E.R. Squibb Pharmaceuticals Company. It was here that she gained valuable experience in the industry that would later shape her career.
An interesting fact about Arden is that she painted her first salon on 5th Avenue red in order to stand out from the standard gray buildings at the time.
In 1915, she married Thomas Lewis who helped greatly expand their business. However, their constant work commitment eventually led to their divorce.
