About Edmonia Lewis
Edmonia Lewis, born on July 4, 1844 in New York City, was a renowned sculptor. Her career took her to Rome, Italy where she created famous sculptures such as The Death of Cleopatra (weighing more than 3,000 pounds and made of marble) and Forever Free (a tribute to the end of slavery). After graduating from Oberlin College in Ohio, she moved to Boston, Massachusetts to begin her career as a sculptor.
Her Native American ancestry served as inspiration for one of her sculptures entitled Old Arrow-Maker and His Daughter in 1866. Born into a family with Haitian, African, African-American, and Mississauga Ojibwe heritage; Edmonia Lewis left behind an incredible legacy in the world of art.
