Edith Windsor was an American LGBT rights activist and a technology manager at IBM. She is best known for her role in the landmark Supreme Court case of United States v. Windsor, which contributed to significant advancements in the same-sex marriage movement in the United States.
Windsor received her bachelor’s degree from Temple University in 1950 and went on to pursue a master’s degree in mathematics at New York University, which she obtained in 1957. Her personal life became public when she fell in love with a fellow classmate at Temple University, leading to her divorce from Saul Windsor due to her attraction towards women.
Throughout her career as an activist, Windsor received several awards including the Susan B. Anthony Award in 2012 and the New York City Council Award in 2011. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to James and Celia Schlain, she later married Judith Kasen in 2016.
