Edith Wharton was an American novelist born on January 24, 1862, in New York City, New York. She is best known for her works The Age of Innocence (1920), Ethan Frome (1911), and The House of Mirth (1905). These novels, renowned for their dramatic irony, earned her the Pulitzer Prize and multiple Nobel Prize nominations.
Prior to her literary career, she found success as a garden and interior designer. Her first published work was an 1897 book called The Decoration of Houses. Notably, Edith Wharton became the first woman to win a Pulitzer Prize.
Edith was born into a prominent New York City family alongside her two brothers. In 1885, she married Teddy Robbins Wharton who later suffered from severe mental illness leading to their divorce in 1913.
