About Edith Pretty
Edith Pretty (1883-1942) was an English landowner and philanthropist known for her discovery of the Sutton Hoo ship burial. Born in Elland, Yorkshire, she came from a wealthy industrialist family. She married Frank Pretty in 1926 and had one child, Robert Dempster Pretty. During World War I, she worked as a quartermaster at a Red Cross auxiliary hospital.
In 1938, Edith hired a local excavator to investigate the burial mounds on her estate, leading to the discovery of the Sutton Hoo ship burial with its Anglo-Saxon artifacts. In 1939, she donated all the findings to the British Museum where they are still held today.
Aside from her archaeological interest, Edith was also drawn to Spiritualism and supported spiritualist churches financially. She passed away in 1942 at age 59 following a stroke; her son was raised by her sister after her husband’s death in 1934.
