Edith Cowan (1861-08-02) was a prominent Australian politician and Nationalist Member of the Parliament of Western Australia from 1921 to 1924. She is remembered as a strong advocate for women’s health and the welfare of disadvantaged groups.

Prior to her career in politics, Cowan spent her formative years living with her grandmother after attending a boarding school in Perth. Interestingly, she was also a freemason and later became the first woman featured on the back of Australia’s $50 note.
