About Edith Cavell
Edith Cavell was a prominent figure in World War I, known for her courageous efforts in aiding Allied troops during the German Occupation of Belgium. Born on December 4, 1865, in England, she pursued a career as a nurse and played an instrumental role in rescuing nearly two hundred soldiers. Despite being executed by German soldiers, she remained steadfastly impartial, providing care to wounded individuals from both sides of the conflict.
Prior to her heroic acts during the war, Cavell completed her nurse’s training at the London Hospital and later established L’Ecole Belge d’Infirmieres Diplomees – a nursing school located in Belgium. Additionally, she authored a professional nursing publication called L’infirmiere.
Before embarking on her nursing career, Edith worked as a governess in Brussels alongside her three siblings. The family was raised by their father who served as an Anglican minister in Swardeston village located in Norfolk, England.
