Drupatee Ramgoonai, born on March 2, 1945 in Trinidad and Tobago, is a world music singer credited with popularizing “chutney soca” music, a term which she also coined. She gained widespread recognition for her hit song “(Roll Up the Tassa) Mr. Bissessar” released in 1988.
Prior to her fame, Drupatee studied classical Indian music under the famous Professor Adesh. She is widely known for being the first East Indian woman to sing in the soca style, sparking controversy among conservative Indian citizens.
