About Dorothy Stang
Dorothy Stang, born on July 7, 1931 in Ohio, was an American-born Brazilian nun known for her work as a civil rights leader and advocate for the environment. She became a naturalized Brazilian citizen in the 1970s and dedicated herself to fighting against deforestation in the Amazon.
Stang’s outspoken advocacy for the environment and the rights of the poor made her a target of resentment from local ranchers who employed criminals. Tragically, she was murdered on her Way to a community meeting for Amazon rights, leaving behind her brother David Stang, who met with the American Ambassador to Brazil following her death.
